The Blood I Carry Richard Adeniyi Blood! Blood is my story. I know, I know it's gory. But the burden came by birth, Through a body borrowed from earth. Mine is a boiling red sea, A family history flowing through me. I cried at the beginning, Born into the den offering me belonging. Do I deserve Mars as my father? Will my birth be followed by my murder? Every mistake earned me some beating. He always left my innocent skin bleeding. I nursed several wounds and suffered a fracture, Bruises — evidence I had no means to capture. The suffering grew and grew, And my hot blood continued to brew. It reached a temperature so high That it needed an outlet. Life gave me a chance, Innocent souls came by. A school: children in the classroom, And there I was in my usual fume. A hot-blooded teacher handing out lashes, As the terror of his childhood was displayed in flashes. Shall we blame the funny, friendly Master Richard? Isn't it his father's blood running in his veins? Did he choose to become the frightening wizard, Or are his lashes expressions of his childhood pains?
